Firefly AE1020 – (Leisure Pick)

First on our list is the Firefly AE1020 kayak. This kayak is great for leisurely rides on your favorite stretches of calm water.

  • Length: 7’10”
  • Width: 35”
  • Materials: PVC, rubber
  • Weight: 16 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 250 lbs

Who is it For?

The Firefly AE1020 is great for those who like to kayak in inland waters and bays at a meandering pace. This kayak could be great for photographers, videographers, explorers, or those who are just looking for a leisurely jaunt on the water.

On Water Performance

The Firefly is best-suited for class I-II rated calm water like lakes, bays, and slow rivers. So far, there are not many customer reviews on this model, so it is hard to say how well this model handles or how fast it goes.

However, there is a landing plate and a tracking fin integrated into the kayak to help improve the tracking and the maneuverability of this model.

The rigid design of the bow and stern also aids in efficiently cutting through the water, which could lend it to being agile and speedy.

Kayak Features and Design

With its bungee deck lacing, pockets, and complimentary heavy-duty duffel bag, this kayak is great for hauling light cargo. Things like dry bags and other supplies are great for a leisurely day paddle.

This kayak also includes a foot bellow pump, a collapsible paddle, and a removable folding seat

What Customers Think

The customer reviews page on the Advanced Elements website is still under construction, so reviews on this model are hard to come by. However, one of their ambassadors covets her Firefly and has a rather funny story about it.

While kayaking in Chile, a local man saw her Firefly kayak and tried to convince her to trade it for a sheep. When she politely said no, he quickly offered two sheep!

  • Lightweight
  • Rigid bow and stern
  • Simple setup

  • Max passenger height and weight could bar some individuals from using this kayak.
  • Not tandem convertible
  • Only suited for calm waters

PackLite AE3021 – (packrafting Pick)

Next up, we have the PackLite AE3021. This kayak is great for spontaneous kayak trips and folds up into a truly tiny package.

  • Length: 7’ 10”
  • Width: 35”
  • Materials: Rubber, eco-friendly reinforced polyurethane
  • Weight: 4 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 250 lbs

Who is it For?

The PackLite AE 3021 is perfect for those who want to carry minimal cargo but still want to get out onto the water. Weighing in at only four pounds and folding up to about the size of a lunchbox, this kayak is easy to fit into a backpack for spontaneous hiking trips.

Unlike the FireFly, this kayak is entirely inflatable with no rigid frame.

On Water Performance

Like the Firefly, this kayak is best suited for class I-II calm waters like inland waters, lakes, bays, and slow rivers. It’s more of a packraft than a kayak.

Stability is ensured by the PackLite’s 35” width, making it a reliable kayak to maneuver in.

Kayak Features and Design

This kayak is, most notably, a monolithic piece, unlike many other inflatable kayaks on the market. There are no rigid parts, and the entire body relies on being inflated.

Durable yet lightweight, the eco-friendly polyurethane-reinforced fabric keeps this kayak in one piece on many kinds of launch terrain. Although care should still be taken when launching it.

What Customers Think

Overall, customers have many positive things to say about this kayak.

Many customers commend the durability and compact size of this kayak. Some have even mentioned that their kids love it, and having their kids sit in the front of the PackLite helps balance the boat even more.

That being said, there are some instances of weak/defective seams right out of the box or after minimal use. Some have complained about its raft-like qualities, citing that lightly windy conditions cause a fair bit of splashing.

This kayak is essentially a packraft and should be treated as such.

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Portable

  • Does not include a pump
  • Occasional weak seams
  • This kayak sits very low in the water, causing occasional flooding.

Lagoon1 AE1031-O – (Upgraded Leisure Pick)

Now, we come to the Lagoon AE1031-O. This kayak is comparable to the Firefly but with some bonuses.

  • Length: 8’ 4”
  • Width: 34”
  • Materials: Rubber, Rip-stop fabric,
  • Weight: 23 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 250 lbs

Who is it For?

The Lagoon AE1031-O is a great kayak for those who like the look and feel of the Firefly but want a little more power.

Weighing in at 23 lbs, the Lagoon1 has many similar features as the Firefly, but it is a little longer and has a much more durable shell. The Lagoon has an inflatable inner tube design with the bonus of a rugged fabric lining.

While the Lagoon1 is rated for the same classes of water as the Firefly, this kayak is a good  choice if you like to kayak in areas that might have unpredictable debris scattered about.

On Water Performance

The Lagoon1 kayak is rated for class I-II waters like lakes, bays, estuaries, and slow rivers. Its rigid bow and stern frame help this kayak cut cleanly through the water like a inflatable kayak rather than floating on the surface of the water like the PackLite kayak.

This kayak effortlessly glides along in calm water, making it great for meandering kayak trips for the day..

Kayak Features and Design

One thing that stands out about this kayak is the Rip-stop fabric shell.

Like many people, I find the idea of an inflatable boat a little nerve-wracking, even though Advanced Elements rigorously test their kayaks for strength.

The fabric shell adds some peace of mind for those who might be new to the sport and feeling uneasy—it is much harder to puncture fabric than rubber.

What Customers Think

Overall, customers really enjoy this kayak, especially because of how lightweight it is.

Several happy customers on Amazon have mentioned that they are small in both weight and stature and have no problem handling this kayak when it’s fully set up and inflated.

That being said, some have expressed that the tracking fin is too small for their liking, causing the kayak to sometimes swing back and forth with each paddle stroke.

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Very comfortable
  • Easy to set up

  • This kayak is so light that sometimes it is difficult to maneuver in strong winds.
  • Pump not included
  • This kayak is not recommended for serious kayaking and is better suited for leisurely recreation.

Island Voyage 2 AE3023 – (Leisure Tandem Pick)

Next is the Island Voyage 2 AE3023. This kayak is truly a beast, with the bonus of being tandem convertible!

  • Length: 11’ 2”
  • Width: 37”
  • Materials: PVC, rubber, polyester
  • Weight: 31.5 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 400 lbs

Who is it For?

Unlike the previous three kayaks on this list, the Island Voyage 2 AE3023 could be a splendid solution if you love to kayak with your friend or partner!

This kayak has three seat locations so you can configure it into a tandem kayak for two passengers. If it’s just you that day, you can easily switch the seating arrangement to accommodate a single passenger.

On Water Performance

Since this kayak is longer at over eleven feet long, stability and maneuverability are a must.

Large side tubes with this kayak’s substantial width help keep this lightweight kayak stable in the water. It also comes equipped with a deep tracking fin to keep you gliding through the water without too much wiggling.

While it is more difficult to keep tracking steady in an inflatable kayak than it is in a hard shell kayak, the deep tracking fin helps keep you on the straight and narrow.

Kayak Features and Design

As we have mentioned previously in this article, the most prominent feature of this kayak is that it can convert into a tandem.

Aside from that, this kayak comes equipped with high-back padded seats for extended comfort during long kayak trips.

Like the Lagoon1 kayak, this kayak also comes with the added reassurance of a thick, puncture-resistant fabric covering that is stretched over the PVC rubber body.

What Customers Think

On the whole, customers love this kayak. Some have mentioned that the tandem feature makes it a great kayak to take their grandkids out on the lake.

Others have mentioned that it handles well, and the many compartments and pockets are a big hit.

Some people have expressed that it can be a little tight for two people.

  • Easy to get in and out of
  • Easy setup
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Integrated pockets are great for snacks and drinks.
  • Affordable

  • The skeg doesn’t work too well in shallow rivers.
  • No footrests
  • Occasional manufacturer defects
  • Heavier than other models
  • Pump not included

AdvancedFrame Kayak Series – (Flat Water Touring Picks)

The AdvancedFrame Kayak series encompasses a staggering line of six different models. Here, we will break it all down for you!

Kayaks in the AdvancedFrame Series

Who are they For?

The AdvancedFrame Kayak is great for those who like to take their kayaks on camping trips, as there is plenty of room for storage. They also designed this kayak to handle like a hard shell kayak and cut through the water with ease.

The AdvancedFrame Sport Kayak is a superb choice for those who like the functionality of the AdvancedFrame kayak but would prefer a wider point of entry.

The AdvancedFrame Ultralite Kayak is an attractive option for those who like the other models in this line but would like a lighter version

The AdvancedFrame Expedition Elite could be a great option for those who want even more storage capacity for long trips

The AdvancedFrame Convertible Kayak is an awesome option for those who like to tandem kayak in a variety of places. The ability to convert this kayak from an open deck to a closed deck is great for kayaking in warm and cold environments

The AdvancedFrame Convertible Elite is great for those who like the AdvancedFrame Convertible, but want a little more comfort. This kayak comes with adjustable padded seats with lumbar support.

On Water Performance

All the kayaks in this series are rated for class I-II waters such as lakes, bays, slow rivers, and coastal waters

Because of the aluminum rib frame and the rigid floor, the kayaks in this series are quicker in the water and track very well.

Kayak Features and Design

A key feature of the kayaks in this series that makes them stand out from the rest of the models on this list is the use of an aluminum rib frame.

While a few others on this list use an aluminum frame, the “rib” design used in the AdvancedFrame models offers much improved tracking and stability.

These are some of the highest performing Category II (kayak enclosed in nylon) inflatable kayaks on the market.

What Customers Think

Overall, customers really love this series. The Sport and Convertible models are outstanding for those who want to take children or pets out on the water with them.

The Elite models are also amazing for those who like to take serious trips through the Alaskan wilderness. One reviewer even loaded 450 pounds of cargo on his Elite for a long trip down rough rivers.

Complaints about this series are fairly minor. Someone mentioned that the floor plug could use a strap to make it easier to open, and others mentioned it takes a long time to dry.

  • Stable
  • Easy setup
  • Great for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
  • Some models in this series can carry heavy cargo.
  • long-lasting

  • Takes a long time to dry
  • We recommend buying directly from Advanced Elements, as there seem to be some discrepancies with customer service on the Advanced Elements Amazon store.
  • The floor plug can be hard to open.

AirVolution Kayak Series (Rigidity Pick)

Like the AdvancedFrame kayak series, Advanced Elements also have a small series of their AirVolution kayaks! Let’s go over them.

Kayaks in the AirVolution Series

Who is it For?

Both of these kayaks serve the same purposes, with one big difference.

The AirVolution Kayak is great for kayakers that might usually favor a hard-shell kayak but are looking for something lighter and more portable.

This kayak also features an open deck, potentially making it easier to get in and out. This could help those with limited mobility or simply make it easier for those who don’t like to be locked in.

The AirVolution2 is great for those who want all the features of the AirVolution kayak, but would rather have a tandem! Do you love to kayak along coastal waters with your friend or partner and usually prefer a hard shell kayak? This could be a wonderful alternative for you!

On Water Performance

Advanced Elements makes both of these kayaks for calm class II waters like lakes, slow rivers, inland waters, and coastal waters.

The AirVolution kayak sails and feels like a hard shell kayak with great tracking. However, it does move rather slowly in the water, and requires steady, measured paddling to avoid rocking side to side

This kayak would be great for leisurely scenic kayak trips over anything that requires speed.

The AirVolution2 has great stability and tracking and handles really well, especially if you have younger kids or pets with you.

Kayak Features and Design

Both kayaks in this series feature high-pressure drop-stitch inflatable chambers to give the feeling of a hard shell kayak without the extra weight and bulkiness

An open deck makes getting in and out of both kayaks easy. The removable tracking fin, adjustable foot braces, and an adjustable high-back seat make for a comfortable ride.

What Customers Think

Overall, customers love both kayaks. The AirVolution can even double as a paddleboard!

The AirVolution2 is also well-loved by its owners who like to use it for family outings.

However, one reviewer found that the AirVolution moves pretty slowly through the water.

Another reviewer for the AirVolution2 found that the bow of their kayak, unfortunately, cracked after only 14 months of regular use.

  • Easy storage and transportation.
  • Can be used like a paddleboard
  • Sturdy
  • Durable
  • Pumps included with both kayaks.

  • Can be slow
  • The 1-person version is rather heavy.
  • The design of the AirVolution2 makes it hard to clean.

AirFusion EVO AE1042 – (Speed Pick)

Moving onto the next kayak on our list, we have one with an aluminum frame!

  • Length: 13”
  • Width: 24’
  • Materials: Aluminum, PU Tarpaulin, rubber
  • Weight: 32 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 235 lbs

Who is it For?

If you like to take long rides and cover great distances, the AirFusion EVO AE1042 could be a great alternative for you.

Unlike many other kayaks on this list, this kayak has a very slim and sleek profile that lends itself to speed and agility

Unlike many kayaks on this list, this kayak has an aluminum frame rather than just a rigid bow and stern. This hybrid design of an aluminum frame and inflatable components simplifies the design that’s usually used for skin-on-frame kayaks.

On Water Performance

Like many other kayaks on this list, the AirFusion EVO is best suited for class I-II waters like bays, lakes, and slow rivers. Because of its design, it is also great for coastal and open waters

Because of its sleek design and aluminum frame, this kayak is built for speed and agility. In addition, that aluminum frame gives it great tracking and stability when out on the water.

Kayak Features and Design

We have already mentioned it here, but the aluminum frame of the AirFusion EVO is the true star of the show with this kayak.

The unique use of high-pressure drop-stitch engineering enables Advanced Elements to replace cumbersome skin-on-frame components with inflatable chambers and makes setup and breakdown much easier.

This hybrid frame also removes more weight from the kayak. While the AirFusion EVO is a little heavier than some other kayaks on this list at 32 lbs, it’s still far lighter than most hard-shell kayaks.

What Customers Think

Customers truly can’t get enough of this superb kayak.

Many customers love that it has almost the same handling feel as a hard-shell kayak at just a fraction of the weight, making it convenient to store and travel with.

One customer, who happens to be an engineer, mentioned that he and his friends were incredibly impressed with the build of this kayak. Another customer said the AirFusion EVO sped up faster than any other kayak they’ve used! That is really something, seeing as they’ve been kayaking for a very long time.

However, if you’re just starting out, many reviewers recommend starting with one of the other models on this list. The AirFusion EVO is best suited for experienced, advanced kayakers.

  • Handles like a hard shell kayak at a fraction of the weight
  • Easy setup and breakdown
  • Speedy
  • Durable
  • Spray Skirt compatible

  • Pump sold separately
  • Expensive
  • Slightly smaller weight capacity

StraitEdge Kayak Series – (Angler Picks)

Here we have another series! The Advanced Elements StraitEdge series really is an exciting one meant for a wide range of water conditions. This is Advanced Elements answer to fishing kayaks.

Kayaks in the StraitEdge Series

Who is it For?

The StraitEdge and StraitEdge2 Pro kayaks are great for those who would like an open deck with the added stability of an aluminum frame.

The StraitEdge Angler and StraitEdge Angler Pro are great for those who want the open deck and aluminum frame with added functionality. The addition of fishing rod holders and a wide beam makes this a great option for serious fishers.

On Water Performance

The StraitEdge and StraitEdge2 Pro are both incredibly stable in the water. However, the tracking on these two kayaks leaves something to be desired. Both kayaks are rated for class I-III waters like lakes, coastal waters, and moderate to fast-moving rivers.

The StraitEdge Angler and StraitEdge Angler Pro are rated for the same waters as the other two kayaks in this series. They are both extremely stable and built with the movement of reeling in fish in mind.

Kayak Features and Design

The StraitEdge and StraitEdge2 Pro both employ a hybrid inflatable and aluminum frame design that gives these kayaks the feeling of a hard-shell kayak. Both also include self-bailing ports for use in more turbulent waters.

Key features of the StraitEdge Angler and StraitEdge Angler Pro are the accessory rails that you can use to mount both equipment and rods, and the additional robust stabilizing beam.

What Customers Think

The stability of the StraitEdge and the StraitEdge2 Pro kayaks cannot be understated. One kayaker detailed how their StraitEdge kayak even saved their life when they were pulled out into open water in the Gulf of Mexico. Despite raging waters and numerous whirlpools, their kayak never flipped over.

  • Extremely stable
  • Compact enough to take on a plane
  • Sturdy
  • Durable

  • Pump not included
  • Heavy
  • Carrying bag could have more functionality such as backpack straps or metal D-ring zippers to use with a lock
  • Tracking could be better

Attack Pro Whitewater AE1051-Y – (White Water Pick)

If you’re looking for a great whitewater rapids kayak, the Attack Pro Whitewater AE1050-Y is Advanced Elements’ answer to white water kayaking!

  • Length: 9’ 9”
  • Width: 35”
  • Materials: Rubber, heavy-duty PVC Tarpaulin
  • Weight: 25.5 lbs
  • Maximum Capacity: 225 lbs

Who is it For?

Unlike many other kayaks on this list, the Attack Pro kayak is made for experienced kayakers who love whitewater kayaking.

Because this kayak was designed for all whitewater classes, it defers to your experience and skill level. Take it out onto the rivers you prefer, or try something new and daring, it’s up to you!

On Water Performance

While tracking isn’t the main focus with whitewater kayaking—you’re being tossed around in rapids, so good tracking is pretty impossible—the stability on this kayak is great

This kayak is hard to flip, which is a huge bonus when kayaking down potentially dangerous rapids.

When whitewater kayaking, agility is key. The 12” bow and stern rockers help to keep you moving quickly and safely through the waves.

Kayak Features and Design

When whitewater kayaking, you undoubtedly want to stay in your kayak to stay safe and keep your kayak trip enjoyable.

The Attack Pro kayak is outfitted with thigh straps, footpegs, and a high-back seat to keep you firmly and safely in your kayak. Self-bailing ports allow the kayak to expel water that will inevitably splash into the seat cavity.

When partaking in potentially dangerous sports, it’s always a good idea to have food, water, and a first aid kit on hand in case anything goes wrong. The stern of the Attack Pro houses a covered cargo bay where you can stash a drybag to keep your supplies secure and dry

What Customers Think

Overall, customers really enjoy the Attack Pro kayak.

Several reviewers have tested it out on class II and III rapids and found that this kayak is incredibly stable and hard to flip.

Some have even mentioned that the Attack Pro feels smaller than some other whitewater kayaks they have used. This reviewer finds that this is a lot of fun because it gets you right in the fray of the rapids rather than removed from them.

Some customers have complained about this kayak taking on water through the self-bailing ports while on still water, thus causing them to get wet. That being said, this kayak is specifically designed for whitewater kayaking, where getting wet is inevitable.

  • Footpegs and thigh straps create great stabilization within the kayak
  • Affordable
  • Well-built
  • Handles well

  • Can be hard to get back into the carrying duffel bag
  • Pump not included
  • The weight capacity can cause this kayak to take in water through the self-bailers depending on the passenger’s size

The Abyss All-Weather Duffel bag, kayak cart, and the Rapid Up kayak sail are some of the most popular products among Advanced Elements customers.

Advanced Elements Customer Service

Advanced Elements take pride in having a US-based customer service center located right in their company offices near San Francisco, California. Since their customer service is in-house, they are better equipped to answer questions you might have rather than an outsourced call center.

Not too many reviews of Advanced Element’s customer service experience are out there just yet, but one person on TrustPilot gave them five stars for being responsive, friendly, and quick to amend their order error.

Advanced Elements Warranty and Returns Info

Like many products, Advanced Elements kayaks have a one-year warranty, but it doesn’t seem to be automatically included as part of your purchase.

On the Warranty Information page, there is a small form you must fill out to register your kayak for a warranty.

To use your warranty, you must first send in a claim. When that claim is processed, you must include the authorization number and return center address when returning your defective product. This ensures that the return process goes smoothly for all parties involved.

Warranties cover any defects in manufacturing or product failures that occur under normal use. When a claim is fully processed, Advanced Elements will either repair or replace your kayak, free of charge.

The warranty does not cover kayaks purchased for professional use, such as tours or kayaks bought to be rented out. It also does not cover any damage that might occur while kayaking in rapids or from storing your kayak improperly.

Where to Buy Advanced Elements Inflatable Kayaks

There are quite a few places to purchase Advanced Elements kayaks besides the official website.

Advanced Elements also has an Amazon store that lists many of its staple products. If you want to shop somewhere besides Amazon, REI stocks Advanced Elements kayaks and accessories as well.

Unsurprisingly, Advanced Elements products are also available at outdoor retailer staples like REI and Moosejaw, as well as Dick’s Sporting Goods and various local shops across the US, and even up into Canada.

Help support your local outdoor shops by looking there first before heading to a big chain retailer!
